A career lifeline can be a powerful tool in career transition

When the idea of a career change fills your mind it may be a good idea to look back and reflect on your past experiences – to see what you liked and disliked, what was satisfying and what was not. Career lifeline, a simple linear line marking significant milestones, ups and downs in your career, can be a powerful tool in career planning. It can provide additional context and insights into the factors that have influenced your career paths. It may be the first step in moving forward.

Recall events highlighting both high points and low points of your life and career: significant events, milestones, achievements, disappointments, challenges, transitions, and decisions that shaped your professional  journey. Put them on a timeline.

Reflect on your career path, learn from the past. Try to understand patterns, identify turning points, and pay attention to your progress. Looking back and analysing your work life can be a powerful addition to self-knowledge, it may clarify career planning and sharpen goal setting.
